Are you using your metal detector correctly?

Posted:

Most people think that metal detectors work poorly, but the truth is that they are not using their tools correctly. As surprising as it may seem, there is a right way and a wrong way to using a metal detector and, unfortunately, not that many people know how to use their instruments properly. What buyers of goods are mostly interested are reviews and owners opinions, completely neglecting learning about the proper way to operate the tool that detects the presence of metal nearby. The question is, however, do you know how to correctly use your metal detector? If you are like the vast majority of people, namely clueless, you need to read the following guidelines.

Switch your metal detector on and swipe

What you should know is that the metal detector is very similar to a magnetometer. To be more precise, the instrument measures magnetism. If you want to find anything, you need to swing the coil. What most people do is act as if the coil were a pendulum, which is a mistake. Should you hold the coil too high above the ground it will miss items. What you should do is keep the coil horizontally to ground level and sweep slowly from one side to the other so that it can process what is lying underneath. This is actually more important than choosing your settings.

Always search in a pattern

If you have started your search, it is best to work in an organized way. This means that you should not move around without a goal. What you can do is search from left to right. If you do not follow this direction, it will be difficult if not impossible to know which areas you have covered. You can use whatever pattern you find appropriate; just make sure that you do not waste your time.

Learn to dig for things

Determine with the help of the metal detector just how big the object is. If you have a multi-purpose device, this will be simple. You will have to get your hands dirty, literally. Once you find something worthy of your attention, it is necessary to dig it up. The target may not be close to the surface. Nonetheless, you have to unearth the finding without disturbing the ground too much. You may wonder why it is crucial to do so? Well, you do not want anyone else finding your spot. An area can accommodate many hidden treasures and you will not discover all of them from a single trip.

The bottom line is that the use of a metal detector is not complicated, but it is not child’s play either. The great news is though that you can get a return on your investment as long as you use the abovementioned tips. It is important to practice as much as you can as you will not get things right from the very start. No one is born an expert, one learns by doing. So, what are you waiting for?
