Others have volunteered to be hosts and liaisons for incoming resource judges whose training program is described in this web site's 2007 schedule. 15 Ohio and 15 Maryland judges begin Platform A's program, along with approximately 145 judges from 39 additional jurisdictions. Eight ASTAR Fellows served as judicial faculty for New York's complex evidence seminar, using their training to in turn train their New York colleagues. Their performances drew high praise.

Many Fellows have volunteered to design elements of the Platform B (advanced science) Judges' Nanotechnology Institute scheduled for late March 2007 at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Their colleagues also serve on Steering Groups for the 2007 National Judges' Science School at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (Neuroscience / Bio-Behavioral Technologies) and the 2007 Platform B Advanced Forensics Institute at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York.

In keeping with this well-deserved appreciation for the judicial officers whose talents make ASTAR's work possible, two behind-the-scenes toilers stand out.

The first is the Hon. Glenn T. Harrell, Jr., Judge of Maryland's highest court, and Chair of the Board for the Judicial Institute of Maryland. Judge Harrell's tireless work on behalf of the resource judge effort takes many forms and has moved us ahead substantially. His work excelled to our benefit in promoting transparency with and achieving praise from the practicing Bar of Maryland.

A second quiet contributor is the Hon. Eric T. Washington, Chief Judge of the DC Court of Appeals. CJ Washington guided a merger of ASTAR and ASTA Board during the past several months, resulting in a firm foundation for program certification, an ASTAR principle. He provides continuing guidance as a Member of ASTAR's executive committee, and promotes our program development in many important ways, providing an absolutely essential ambassadorial service to judicial and scientific institutions across the Nation.

Thanks to all and best regards. Franklin

On Tuesday, February 27, 2007 the Washington Post reported in page 2 story by Rick Weiss, the U. S. Department of Agriculture's approval of a biotechnology company's permit for Kansas outdoors farming of rice with human genes to grow medicinal proteins. The legal implications are huge. Stay tuned.
